Breakfast with The Honorable Clifton R. Wharton, Jr

This past Tuesday, as part of Black History Month at Johns Hopkins SAIS, students had the opportunity to meet the Honorable Clifton R. Wharton, Jr. and discuss his latest book, Privilege and Prejudice: The Life of a Black Pioneer.

Dr. Wharton is the first African American to graduate from SAIS in 1948, and afterwards he received an MA and PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago. Since that time, Dr. Wharton has led a distinguished career across various sectors. As his book title notes, he has been a pioneer in business, education, philanthropy, and foreign policy.

Wharton is the first African American to: head a Fortune 500 company (TIAA-CREF); serve as president of a major U.S. university (Michigan State University); chair a major foundation (Rockefeller Foundation), and serve as the U.S. Deputy Director of State.

We would like to thank Dr. Wharton, Dean Nasr, the Office of Alumni Relations, and all the students who attended.
